The government just launched a RM150 million rebate programme for residential solar. Here's what it is, who qualifies, how to claim it, and why you shouldn't wait.
If you have been considering going solar but the upfront cost has held you back, the Malaysian government has just made the decision significantly easier. Launched on 22 May 2026, the SuRIA Home initiative is offering Malaysian homeowners a direct cash rebate of up to RM 3,000 for installing rooftop solar — and the clock is already ticking.
With a limited national quota of just 250MW and a strict deadline of 31 December 2026, this is a first-come, first-served programme. In this article, we break down everything you need to know about the SuRIA rebate — from eligibility to the application process, and how it stacks up against the previous SolaRIS scheme.
What Is the SuRIA Home Initiative?

SuRIA stands for Sustainable Rebate and Incentive Assistance. The SuRIA Home initiative is a Malaysian government programme by PETRA (Kementerian Peralihan Tenaga dan Transformasi Air), launched on 22 May 2026 in Putrajaya by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
In plain terms, it is a direct cash rebate for solar installation in Malaysia — specifically for homeowners who install a rooftop solar system under the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP). Think of Solar ATAP as the national framework governing how home solar systems connect to the TNB grid, and SuRIA Home as the financial reward for joining it.
The initiative allocates RM 150 million in cash rebates to help Malaysian households lower their electricity bills through residential rooftop solar installations. It is expected to benefit between 45,000 and 50,000 homes nationwide, with a combined solar capacity of around 250MW.

Who Is Eligible — and How Do You Apply?
Eligibility Requirements
SuRIA Home is designed squarely for Malaysian homeowners. The eligibility rules are clear and strict to ensure the rebate reaches genuine residential users.
You qualify if you are:
A Malaysian citizen
The registered TNB account holder for your home
On a Domestic Low Voltage (LV) tariff — a standard residential connection
Installing your solar system under the Solar ATAP programme
Commissioning your Solar ATAP system with TNB by 31 December 2026
You do not qualify if you are:
A company, Sdn Bhd, or partnership (businesses should explore the GITA tax allowance instead…of which, our solar consultants will be ready to help you navigate through)
A non-citizen, even if you own the property
An existing NEM (Net Energy Metering) customer
Installing under SELCO only — it must be Solar ATAP
NOTE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS SuRIA Home is strictly for individual residential consumers. If you own a commercial or industrial property, you are not eligible under this programme, but there are separate incentives available such as the GITA (Green Investment Tax Allowance) and other schemes. How to Apply — Step by Step
1 | Engage a Solar EPCC Contractor Contact a registered Solar EPCC company like Solarlink Energy for a site assessment and quotation. Your installer must be approved under the Solar ATAP programme. |
2 | Install Your Solar ATAP System Proceed with the solar installation. Your installer handles the SEDA registration, technical documentation, and grid connection application with TNB. |
3 | Commission Your System with TNB Once your system is fully installed and connected to the TNB grid, you will receive official commencement of operations approval. This must happen before 31 December 2026 to qualify. |
4 | Submit Your Rebate Claim Submit your MyKad details, TNB account information, and the account holder’s local bank details to claim your spot in the 250MW quota. Claims are processed on a first-come, first-served basis from 1 June 2026 onwards. |
5 | Receive Your Cash Rebate Once verified by SEDA and TNB, the cash rebate is paid directly into your TNB-registered bank account. No waiting for bill credits — it comes straight to you in cash. |
Note: Each eligible individual is limited to one rebate claim. Claim procedures are administered through SEDA Malaysia and TNB. Your Solar EPCC contractor will guide you through the process.

Reminiscent Of SolaRIS?
The SuRIA Home Rebate in Numbers
The math is straightforward. Under SuRIA, you receive a rebate of RM 600 for every 1kWac of solar capacity you install, up to a maximum of RM 3,000. That ceiling is reached at a 5kWac system, which is a very common size for a Malaysian home.
Also, did we mention that Solarlink Energy will match that RM 3,000* so that you will walk a total of RM 6,000 cash rebate all the way to your bank!
SuRIA Home vs. SolaRIS
SuRIA Home is not the first government solar rebate in Malaysia. Its predecessor, the Solar for Rakyat Incentive Scheme (SolaRIS), ran under the earlier Net Energy Metering framework and was widely credited with accelerating residential solar adoption. Here is how the two programmes compare:
Feature | SolaRIS (Previous) | SuRIA Home (2026) |
Rebate per kWac | RM 1,000 | RM 600 |
Maximum rebate | RM 4,000 | RM 3,000 |
Underlying programme | Net Energy Metering (NEM 3.0) | Solar ATAP |
Rebate type | Direct cash to bank account | Direct cash to bank account |
National capacity quota | Varied by phase | 250MW (hard cap) |
Estimated beneficiaries | ~20,000+ homes | 45,000 – 50,000 homes |
Programme deadline | 30 April 2025 | 31 December 2026 or quota used up, whichever comes first. |
Who can apply | Malaysian residential TNB consumers | Malaysian residential TNB consumers |
Budget allocation | Varied | RM 150 million |
BOTTOM LINE COMPARISON SuRIA Home offers a lower rebate per kWac than SolaRIS (RM 600 vs RM 1,000) and a slightly lower maximum payout (RM 3,000 vs RM 4,000). However, it targets significantly more homes (up to 50,000), has a larger total budget, and pays out as direct cash into your bank account — a simpler and faster experience. Analysts believe SuRIA Home could similarly accelerate residential solar adoption, especially as rising electricity tariffs and AFA surcharges make solar savings more compelling than ever. |
When Does SuRIA Home Come Into Effect — and When Does It End?
22 May 2026 Official launch by Deputy PM Fadillah Yusof in Putrajaya | 1 June 2026 Rebate claims officially open — first come, first served | Ongoing 250MW national quota being absorbed — act fast | 31 Dec 2026 Programme ends — or earlier if 250MW quota is reached |
Rebate claims officially open on 1 June 2026 and the programme operates on a first-come, first-served basis. It will continue until 31 December 2026, or until the 250MW quota is fully utilised.
This is the most critical detail: Industry experts expect the quota to be absorbed well before December 31. With 45,000 to 50,000 homes competing for a fixed pool of capacity, early movers will lock in their rebate while late movers may find the quota exhausted. Given that solar panel prices are also rising independently, every month of delay costs money in two ways.
Where Can You Claim This Rebate?
SuRIA Home is a nationwide programme, available to eligible residential TNB consumers across all states in Malaysia — including for solar installations in Johor, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Sabah, Sarawak, and beyond.
The rebate is administered through SEDA Malaysia in partnership with TNB. Your Solar EPCC installer will handle the SEDA documentation and TNB commissioning process on your behalf, so you do not need to navigate the bureaucracy alone.
For homeowners and property owners across Johor Bahru (where we are headquartered) and the rest of Malaysia, Solarlink Energy Sdn Bhd is your trusted local Solar EPCC partner to handle this entire process — from site assessment to commissioning and rebate claim submission…and we will even include our best in class 6 hours response time for all O&M issues for those in Klang Valley and JB regions!
Why Is SuRIA Home a Good Thing for Malaysians?
The SuRIA Home initiative arrives at a critical moment. Here is why it is genuinely good news — not just for individual homeowners, but for Malaysia as a whole:
1. It Directly Reduces Your Electricity Bills
Malaysian electricity tariffs are rising. The Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) mechanism is expected to turn from a rebate to a surcharge of 2.92 sen per kWh in June 2026 due to rising fuel costs. A solar system on your roof insulates you from these grid cost increases — and the RM 3,000 cash rebate shortens your payback period meaningfully.
2. It Covers a Massive Number of Homes
With a RM 150 million budget and a target of 45,000 to 50,000 homes, SuRIA Home is one of the largest residential solar incentive programmes Malaysia has seen. The sheer scale reflects the government's serious commitment to accelerating solar adoption across the country.
3. The Cash Goes Directly to You
Once your MyKad details and TNB account are verified, the rebate is paid directly into your local bank account under the registered TNB customer's name. This is real, tangible cash — not a future bill credit.
4. It Aligns With Long-Term Savings
Over 25 years, a solar system delivers RM 70,000 to RM 120,000 in cumulative savings. SuRIA Home reduces the upfront cost of getting to that point. When you stack the RM 3,000 cash rebate on top of monthly electricity bill savings and rising tariff protection, the financial case for solar has rarely been stronger.
5. It Supports Malaysia's Clean Energy Goals
SuRIA Home drives Malaysia toward its target of 70% renewable energy capacity by 2050. By supporting 250MW of new residential solar capacity, the programme also reduces strain on the national grid — which is increasingly important as data centre demand and EV adoption accelerate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for SuRIA Home if my solar system was already installed before June 2026?
For now, it seems that Solar ATAP systems that commence operations from 1 June 2026 onwards, and are commissioned with TNB by 31 December 2026, are eligible (based on official documents and press releases from PETRA as well as from other relevant authorities).
Is SuRIA Home available for commercial or industrial properties?
No. SuRIA Home is exclusively for individual domestic Low Voltage TNB consumers. Business owners, companies (Sdn Bhd), and partnerships are not eligible. Commercial and industrial clients may consider the GITA (Green Investment Tax Allowance). Contact Solarlink Energy for a consultation.
What happens if the 250MW quota runs out before December 31?
The programme closes immediately once the national quota is exhausted, regardless of the date. Industry experts expect the quota to fill well before the December deadline, so early action is strongly advised.
